Stewart and I taught Skye to bark on command. We did this by holding her toy and repeating the command speak until she eventually got fed up and barked at us for not handing over her toy. Of course the toy was immediately handed over along with saying “good girl” when she let out a bark. She has figured out that being told she’s a good girl is highly desirable. The best thing about her “speaking” is that it’s quite a quiet bark compared to the ear-ringers she comes out with when she’s properly excited. Skye is actually getting close to the stage where she can do more tricks than my previous dog, Sansa. Considering Sansa was very intelligent and completely focused on her training when we did it with her this is a massive achievement.
